Our costume designer, Rose Plant, and our Wardrobe Assistant, Sandra Christian, have been running on overdrive, dealing with over 100 costumes. Monday evening, the rehearsals will move from our offices to The Southside Theater.

Trouble in Mind

A potent opener for Aurora Theatre’s season… sharply drawn characters in an intriguing situation laced with satire that still burns 55 years later…. – Robert Hurwitt, SF Chronicle

“Laced with biting wit, this play-within-a-play is so intensely funny that its stinging condemnation of the status quo hits all the harder. ” – Karen D’Souza, Mercury News/BANG

“What a magnificent start for the fall season! This play has everything — humor, pathos, excitement and intense acting — and certainly deserved the standing ovation it received. This is really a must-see!”- Jerry Friedman, KGO Radio

Aurora Theatre Company is proud to announce that ‘Trouble in Mind’ has been extended through October 3rd! Don’t miss your chance to see the play that critics and audiences are raving about! Aurora also extends a special offer to friends of Lorraine Hansberry Theatre with a $10 off the regular ticket price. Just go to www.auroratheatre.org or call 510-843-4822 and use the code: LHT10. Limit 4 tickets and subject to availability. Not valid on previously purchased tickets.

Trouble in Mind follows a mixed-race cast attempting to mount a production of a “progressive” new play on Broadway in the 1950s. The play-an anti-lynching drama set in the South-is written by a white man and directed by a white man, and marks the first opportunity for a gifted black actress to play a leading role on Broadway. But what compromises must she make to succeed? More than 40 years after it was written, Trouble in Mind, according to The New York Times, “still has the power to make one feel its anger and humor.” Bay Area favorite Margo Hall makes her Aurora debut with this play.

Robin Stanton (Speech & Debate, Permanent Collection) directs this humorous and heartbreaking play about race, identity and opportunity. Featuring Margo Hall, Tim Kniffin, Rhonnie Washington, Elizabeth Carter, Michael Ray Wisely, Earll Kingston, Patrick Russell, Jon Joseph Gentry and Melissa Quine.

The Artistic Director Search continues! (And it’s looking great!)

Our Artistic Director search is moving forward. We have been excited and impressed by the resumes and letters that we have received from artists across the city, country, and entire world! The Board’s Search Committee is busy reviewing resumes and consulting with our Artistic Advisory Board. We hope to begin contacting applicants soon.

And finally, check this out — a new one-man show by a Bay Area native and
current theater student.

Today I received an email from Troy Dangerfield, who wrote, “I am a bay area native who is currently studying acting  at Syracuse University. This summer I am putting on a one man show  called Throw Pitchfork,  written by Alexander Thomas. It is a really powerful and inspiring piece. I was wondering if it is at all possible to reach out to the Lorraine Hansberry Mailing List. I don’t know if that is a Taboo request. I am just a young  actor trying to reach out to an African American Audience. It is going to be a really great show I  have an ACT director and its going to be in a nice newly renovated Black Box space on
Hyde and  Golden Gate. I was just hoping that I could get support from another theater who is known for telling African American stories.” No problem, Troy! We are very happy to get the word out about other performers and interesting new works!

Here’s a synopsis of the show: Willie Thomas, an overworked, alcoholic, African-American father, passes on a legacy of self-hate and anger to his four sons: Jimmy, Wesley, Cleve, and the youngest, Alex. Each finds his own way to digest this legacy — Jimmy through hard drugs, Wes through petty  crime, Cleve through education and the arts. The older brothers are seen through the eyes of young Alex, who had a pitchfork thrown at him by  his father during a drunken rage. He desperately  searches for self-definition as he attempts both to emulate and separate himself from his brothers and father. His search crystallizes when his father’s true story is revealed.
